GIA DIAMONDS: A BRIEF OVERVIEW
Finding the right diamond in HK for the one you love can be hard work. Most people in the market for a diamond in Hong Kong do not have the required expertise and training to ascertain the quality of diamonds. This is especially so, if you are not a seasoned buyer. The chances of choosing a diamond of poor quality are always present. This can be problematic.
Not only are diamonds expensively-priced gemstones, but it may be that you are planning to make such high-value purchases for a very special occasion. GIA diamond grading in HK can reduce your risk and give you a peace of mind with every sparkling purchase you make.
GIA diamonds are certified by the Gemological Institute of America for quality in relation to the jeweller’s claims. This will undoubtedly take the guesswork out of the process if you’re in the market for a high-quality diamond in Hong Kong.
QUALITY DIAMONDS IN HONG KONG YOU CAN TRUST
GIA diamond certifications are trusted around the world, thanks to the credibility of the Gemological Institute of America. The organization is credited with the International Diamond Grading System and the 4Cs (colour, cut, clarity and carat weight). Both of these are the highest international standards for grading and describing diamond quality.
The GIA Diamond Grading report provides all buyers with transparency into their purchase, through an in-depth analysis of the unique qualities and characteristics of loose diamonds based on various characteristics.
More specifically, GIA laboratories can:
- Accurately differentiate synthetic from natural diamonds
- Detect colour, pressure, and temperature treatments in HPHT diamonds
- Detect chemical vapor depositions (CVD)
- Provide a grading system for brilliance in diamond cut and shape
- Provide a grading and description for diamond color, cut, clarity, and carat weight
HOW DOES GIA EVALUATE & GRADE DIAMONDS?
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has spent decades on diamond research across the world. Their comprehensive knowledge about the way diamonds are formed and what makes them different across many regions, adds immense value to the diamond grading process.
In particular, GIA uses the GIA DiamondCheck™ machine to evaluate and grade stones. This is the latest in diamond quality grading technology and allows grading experts to take a closer look at the various facets of the rock being examined.
The device employs a commercially-available spectroscopic instrument, which uses GIA’s proprietary diamond grading software to conduct quality testing. The DiamondCheck™ machine supports testing of stones weighing between 1 point and 10 carats at a time. The testing reveals one of three results:
- Natural diamonds – which are then priced and packaged to be sold.
- Diamond, but further testing necessary – A lower quality stone that needs more testing to confirm if it's natural or laboratory-made.
- Non-diamond material – which may be a diamond look-alike, but made from materials such as cubic zirconia or moissanite.
In addition to using the DiamondCheck™ technology, GIA experts also employ a host of other tests to provide a grading for the diamond – which typically ranges from D to Z.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS A DIAMOND?
A diamond is a naturally occurring rare mineral. It is made up of carbon, the same element that is found in all organic matter such as fossil fuels, cotton, wood, wool and so on. To become a diamond, the carbon particles form a special crystalline shape called the “diamond cubic”.
WHERE ARE THEY FOUND?
Diamonds were formed more than three billion years ago when intense pressure and heat caused carbon particles inside the earth to crystalize.
Most natural diamonds are found at depths ranging between 150 and 250 kilometers below the earth’s surface. A few have also been found at 800 kilometers’ depth. Older diamonds (at least a few million years old) were brought to the earth’s surface during volcanic eruptions. These were deposited in rocks on earth’s surface.
The countries with the largest stocks include Russia, Botswana, South Africa, Angola, Australia, Republic of Congo and Canada.
HOW ARE DIAMONDS IN HK PRICED?
When it comes to GIA diamonds in HK, uncut and rough stones are priced differently compared to stones which are processed and shaped. Usually, the price of a diamond in Hong Kong depends on its cut, clarity, color and size, in addition to the demand in the market. The higher the demand, the higher the diamond price in general.
WHAT MAKES DIAMONDS SO VALUABLE?
The carbon atoms in the diamond are arranged in a tightly bonded way that makes it the strongest and hardest substance on earth. According to the rating on the Mohs Hardness Scale, a diamond ranks 10/10 – which is the highest ranking. This makes them the hardest substances on the planet.
Diamonds are not only tough but are extremely resistant to chemicals and heat. It is only possible to burn a diamond when it is exposed to temperatures of over 720° Celsius (in air) or 850° Celsius (in vacuum). Very strong acids such as hydrochloric acid or sulphuric acid have no effect as well. Their unique structure and their cubic arrangement are the factors that make them strong and lustrous.
Due to these properties, your diamond will not experience wear and tear in the form of scratches and dents. This makes them extremely valuable.
ARE DIAMONDS INDESTRUCTIBLE?
Despite their hardiness, diamonds are not indestructible. Denting it severely or exposing it to extensive force can cause parts of the diamond to chip off. But there is no need to worry. You can get that broken diamond piece fitted or set into another piece of jewelry of your choice.
WHAT GIVES DIAMONDS THEIR COLOUR, CLARITY AND SHAPE?
The crystals of diamonds are subject to varying levels of pressure and heat below the earth’s surface. This alters the crystal characteristics and decides the color, clarity and shape of the diamond.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT SHAPES OF A DIAMOND?
Diamonds in Hong Kong can be cut into different shapes and it is these shapes that lend so much beauty to your necklace, ring or bracelet. The various diamond cuts you can typically choose from are:
While most diamond pieces come pre-cut according to the jewelry design, you can choose a shape of your choice for custom pieces. The round brilliant shape is the most expensive diamond cut in the market today.
WHAT DO THE DIFFERENT DIAMOND CLARITY GRADES MEAN?
A diamond’s clarity refers to how easily you can look through a diamond. A clear diamond will allow you to see through it without obstruction, while an included diamond will have a cloud-like structure within the diamond, which makes it more opaque. While the inclusions don’t affect the diamond’s usability, a clear diamond is more aesthetically desirable and hence of a higher value.
The different diamond clarities you can choose from are:

WHAT IS THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS DIAMONDS?
The world’s most famous diamonds are renowned for their carats and quality. Here are the top 5 most known diamonds in the world:
HOW ARE DIAMONDS POLISHED AND CUT?
When you buy a GIA diamond in Hong Kong, you may be wondering about the process diamond HK companies use to polish and cut them.
The stones that are found in the earth’s crust are rough and without a defined shape in nature. Jewelry manufacturers refine the stones by cutting and polishing them according to the demand in the market.
The first step is the planning stage, where the shape of the stone to be cut is determined. This is done to minimize waste and optimize the rough stone’s yield. The rough stone is split into different pieces using specialized tools. Bruting is performed to give a specific shape to the split rough stones. Next, the shaped stone is polished where facets are created. The rough stone is placed on a rotating arm while a spinning wheel polishes the facets, creating brilliant finished products.
WHAT IS A GIA DIAMOND?
Many consumers would have heard of GIA diamonds or GIA certified diamonds. The GIA or Gemological Institute of America is one of the most recognized certification entities.
The GIA is based in California and has eleven campuses, 4 research centers and nine laboratories across thirteen countries. Professional gemologists working here use standardized assessment techniques to assure the authenticity and reliability of a particular stone.
A GIA diamond is one that meets GIA’s standards with respect to clarity, color, cut, and carat weight.
WHAT DOES “CARAT” OF A DIAMOND MEAN?
“Carat” refers to the actual weight of the diamond. Typically, 1 carat = 0.200 grams or 1/5 gram in weight. A good carat for a single diamond stone is between 0.5 carats and 1 carat. This ensures your stone is visible, but not overwhelmingly eye-catching.
WHAT IS THE “IDEAL CUT DIAMOND” PROPORTION?
The “ideal cut diamond” proportions refer to a universally acknowledged set of specifications, which result in a final product that has the highest elegance and brilliance. These proportions are used specifically for round cut diamonds and were proposed by Marcel Tolkowsky.
The ideal cut diamond proportion includes:
If you’d like your diamond HK jewelry made using this proportion, do let us know. We can help fulfil your order. In fact, we have refined this process further and can create the bespoke jewelry you want.
WHAT IS “DIAMOND FIRE”
Diamond fire refers to the rainbow-like colour, sparkle and brilliance that is emitted by a stone when light falls upon it. This diamond fire occurs as a result of the refraction of light and it causes the diamond to be suffused with a brilliant rainbow glow it produces. The more vivid the diamond fire, the better the quality of the stone.
Diamond fire is different from diamond brilliance and scintillation. Brilliance refers to the amount of clarity that a diamond has due to the polishing and cutting technique. Scintillation refers to the high level of sparkles that a diamond emits due to refraction – where it looks like the colors are jumping out of the GIA diamond. The fire is the balanced aesthetic, which combines both diamond brilliance and scintillation, to give your stone a highly elegant appearance.
WHAT ARE CERTIFIED AND NON-CERTIFIED DIAMONDS?
A certified diamond HK is a stone that has undergone stringent quality checks and has been carefully graded for its authenticity.
Many independent labs and entities across the world evaluate gemstones and offer grading and certification services. The Independent Gem Lab has expert gemologists who scientifically test and assess the quality of the diamond. The lab then issues a report or certificate on the gemstones. Many certified diamonds have the certification number laser inscribed on its edge.
The American Gem Society Laboratories or AGSL is another certification entity based in Nevada, U.S. The lab specializes in grading of gemstones and has developed its own color, cut and clarity standards for diamonds. The IGI or International Gemological Institute in Belgium certifies jewelry and coloured stones apart from diamonds.
WHY SHOULD I ONLY BUY CERTIFIED GIA DIAMONDS?
In terms of appearance, there is no difference between a certified and non-certified diamond. However, when you are investing heavily, buying a certified diamond in Hong Kong is highly recommended.
A GIA diamond certification proves the gemstones you are buying are natural, genuine and are from a reliable supplier. When you choose to purchase a certified diamond, you are essentially purchasing a product that is recognized universally for its premium-quality. If you ever want to sell the diamond, your certificate of authenticity and quality will help you get a good diamond price in HK for it.
Our commitment at Difeee is to source the best quality stones that meet the stringent standards set by reputable gemological laboratories. All our diamonds in Hong Kong have been certified by GIA and IGI. Buying an IGI- certified or GIA diamond from our store is the best way to ensure you get exceptional quality and authentic products.

WHAT ARE SYNTHETIC DIAMONDS?
Synthetic or man-made diamonds are created in labs. These lab-grown varieties look similar to natural ones. This is because the procedures and methods used to create synthetic ones are the same as what is found in nature, inside the earth. The only difference is that while natural diamonds take millions of years to form, synthetic diamonds hasten the process into just a matter of a few weeks, with the help of cutting-edge technology.
Synthetic diamonds can be made in two ways:
High Pressure, High Temperature (H.P.H.T.) Process – The crushing force of the earth is recreated using technology that can induce immense pressure and heat on the carbon particles. This process was developed in the 1950s.
Chemical Vapor Deposition (C.V.D.) Process – This is the latest process in synthetic diamond manufacturing, developed in the early 2000s. Methane and hydrogen are directed to a vacuum chamber that is exposed to very high temperatures. Here the combination of gases is turned into plasma which releases carbon particles that are then layered on a diamond seed.
Often, the temperatures in these processes can go up to 3000 degrees Celsius (5000 degrees Fahrenheit).
Synthetic stones also have the same crystal structure that natural ones have. But the type of unique crystalline features found in natural diamonds are rare and extremely special, compared to synthetic ones which are mass produced.
HOW ARE SYNTHETIC DIAMONDS GRADED?
Synthetic diamonds are graded by the GIA in the same way as natural ones are. Our GIA synthetic diamonds undergo rigorous testing at Difeee before being sold. We vet each lab-grown diamond as if it were natural, to ensure you receive the very best quality product.
