How to Read a Diamond Certificate
GIA Diamond Grading Report

The GIA offers the highest standard of grading report available globally. Each evaluation includes:
Shape and cut
This notes the shape of the cut diamond as seen from above, as well as its cutting style. This is not where the quality of the cut is appraised (see 'cut grade' below).Measurements
This records the diamond’s diameter and depth measurements in millimetres.Carat weight
The diamond's weight in carats will be listed here, with one carat equalling 0.20 grams.Color grade
For the commonly purchased white diamond, a master stone that's colorless will be used to determine its color – actually looking for an absence of color for the highest possible grade.Clarity grade
The diamond will be viewed under 10x magnification to note any internal or external bruises, clouds, markings or imperfections – known as inclusions (internal) and blemishes (external).Cut grade
The GIA will appraise the quality, finish, polish and symmetry of the cut, and now only issues a cut grade for round brilliant diamonds.Fluorescence
The fluorescent glow a diamond emits when held under UV rays is graded from no fluorescence to very high. Typically, the lower the fluorescence, the higher the diamond’s value in this category.Plotting diagram
This is a diagram of the shape and standard cut of the diamond from both above and below. Any inclusions or blemishes will be marked on the drawing as they are located on or within the diamond.Proportions diagram

Exactly the same categories found on the GIA Diamond Grading Report appear on the GIA Diamond Dossier, except for the plotting diagram. Each dossier also includes a micro-laser inscription.
EGL USA Diamond Certificate

EGL USA Diamond Grading Certificates feature the same information as the GIA Diamond Report but without a proportion diagram, or a cut grade. Instead, polish and symmetry are given two separate grades ranging from Poor to Excellent, proportion percentages of the Depth, Table, Crown and Pavilion are listed, and Girdle thickness and Culet size are reported.
EGL USA Diamond Analysis Report
EGL USA Diamond Analysis Reports, for round stones only, include all of the information in the above Diamond Certificate as well as a final cut, proportions diagram and a UGS Consultation of Appraisal with a listed retail replacement value.
E.G.L International Diamond Certificate

E.G.L. International Diamond Certificates include the same information as the GIA Diamond Report but without a proportion diagram. E.G.L. International also produces diamond certificates in smaller sizes, including a credit card–sized certificate.

IGI Diamond Reports typically include:
Shape and cut

Any additional points not relevant elsewhere will be listed here.The IGI also issues passport-sized Diamond IDs, which are easily carried around or kept near to the diamond. These include the same information found on IGI Diamond Reports, except for the plotting diagram. The IGI can also produce the same document in a credit card size.
AGS Diamond Quality Document

The AGS is known for providing detailed and specialised appraisals of each diamond's cut. Their documents encompass:
Shape and style
This notes the shape of the cut diamond as seen from above, as well as its cutting style. This is not where the quality of the cut is appraised (see 'cut grade' below).Measurements

The AGS will examine diamonds in 3D and assess their quality, polish and light performance to grade each cut on a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 being the highest-quality grade.Color grade
